Results – 15th September
The Mixed A started their season last weekend, while the Men’s and Women’s teams were playing in pre-season friendlies, in preparation for their league matches that start on 29th September.
Mixed A lost 3-5 away to South Wigston
Goals: Ryan Harrison (2) & Ellie Cawthrow
“The Mixed A’s began their assault on Division 1 with a visit to Manor Road to face South Wigston. The first 10 minutes showed us just what we are in for, with the pace of the game a step up from what we are used to, but Harborough steadied themselves and began to fight back well.
Chances were few and far between, with the game in the balance, both teams working hard to find any pockets of space. South Wigston struck first with 2 goals, but Harborough kept their heads up and set about looking for more opportunities to test the opposition keeper. Solid defending prevented South Wigston from striking again, and hard work in midfield gave the forwards chances to grab a goal. After a few attempts the reward came, as Ryan Harrison sliced between the defenders, before slotting it into the bottom right hand corner.
Everyone summoned what energy was left to keep the pressure applied, again making the hard work pay off by scoring again from a short corner. Some inspired goal keeping using just about every part of the body (including the knee cap and head) kept us in it, until South Wigston found some space and scored their third.
Approaching the last 10 minutes, a quick hit from the back found Tom Pedler, who drove in towards the opposition D, the initial shot came off the keepers pads, then bounced off the back of his helmet, before dropping somewhere near the goal. Ellie Cawthrow pounced to sweep it into the goal to make it 3-3. Unfortunately our hunt for a point came to no avail, with South Wigston grabbing two more goals, final score 5-3.
The whole team played some great hockey, and it has given us some good experience and a good baseline heading into the rest of the season to build upon. Next week sees our first home match, lets hope we can bring home our first points of the season!”
