Despite many matches being called off due to poor pitch conditions, we did see some hockey played last Saturday.
Men’s 3 drew 3-3 at home to Northampton Saints 5
Goals: Wyn Sleeman, Harry Wilford & Simon Paine
Player of the Match was GK Mike Haynes-Coote
“Harborough Men’s 3s hosted Northampton Saints 5s in an unexpectedly thrilling game. The 3s knew it was going to be tough as Saints had beaten Harborough 10-0 in the previous fixture!
Saints opened the game strongly, they attacked straight from pushback and almost immediately won a string of short corners. After some solid defence, Harborough found their way into the game and had some attacks of their own. One of these attacks led to an attempt on goal which was stopped on the line by a Saints foot and Harborough was awarded a flick. Simon Paine stepped up to take it and calmly slotted it into the net.
Saints came back fighting, determined to level the scoreline, and won a flick. The flick was scored but it wasn’t given – the Saints player had ‘hit’ the ball. A moment of panic from the Harbrough hit-out led to a 1-on-1 with the keeper which was won by the Saints attacker, 1-1. Saints continued to attack and this lead to their second goal, 2-1 at half time.
Harborough weren’t out of this game. Both teams started well, it was end-to-end stuff, Harborough were surely going to score? They did, from a deflection from Harry Wilford, with the initial shot by Wyn Sleeman. Saints soon caught up, snatching another goal, but Harborough were determined not to lose this game. With every single player working to their maximum, eventually Harborough were rewarded. A short corner, hit straight from the top of the D by Sleeman into the bottom corner, Harborough were level again. The game became scrappy as both sides were desperate to score, but this didn’t happen and the game finished with the 3-3 draw.
An outstanding effort by everyone in a tough, controversial, yet enjoyable game. Thank you to everyone who came to watch.”
Badgers won 2-0 at home to Northampton Saints Badgers 2
Goals: Finn Ingram-Hawkes & May Townsley
“Another great game this week for our Badgers. We played against Norhampton Saints who always put out a young skilled squad against us, but our gameplay each week just keeps on getting better.
In the first half we were mostly in their half of the pitch, always putting the pressure on, and it soon paid off with a goal from Finn Ingram-Hawkes (his first one, well done!). Saints did get the odd break against us, but with great defending from Oliver Laskey and Rory McGillivary, plus some good saves by Megan Astbury in goal, we kept them at bay.
In the second half we carried on with the same tatics and soon May Towsley scored a brilliant second goal. The final score was 2-0 to us. A big thanks to all our supporters again!”
Mixed A lost 2-7 away to Leicester Hospitals A
