Our results from the last matches of 2019, including an exciting England Hockey Championship match for the Men’s 1s team.

Men’s 1 drew 4-4, and won 5-4 on flicks, at home to University of Nottingham Men’s 4s (EH Championships)
Goals: Nick Hall (2), Tom Whitehouse & Jon Cooper
Player of the Match: Jake Wilson

"In their league, Market Harborough Hockey Club Men’s first team are sitting at the top of the table going into the Christmas break. However, Saturday’s EH Championship home fixture against the University of Nottingham 4s would prove to be the toughest challenge yet. The university team, 3rd in the league above, enjoyed much of the first 15 minutes of possession, pressing high in attack. Despite this, and against the run of play, Harborough were clinical on the counter-attack and found themselves 2-0 up, with the first from leading scorer Tom Whitehouse, and the second through Nick Hall.

By half-time Uni of Notts had pulled one back and both teams knew they were in a competitive match. The opposition started the second half with a determined, all-out attack and were eventually rewarded with an equaliser. Battling defence from Harborough and some fine saves from keeper Jake Wilson meant that Harborough could always capitalise at the other end, picking up a two more goals through Nick Hall and Jon Cooper at their only two penalty corners of the game. These came either side of Uni’s 3rd and with the score poised at 4-3, the final penalty corner was awarded to the away team as the final whistle blew. Taking advantage of 10 players around the circle, Uni of Nottingham’s equaliser meant the teams would fight for a place in the next round with penalty flicks. All 5 flicks were dispatched successfully by the Harborough men and a crucial save from MHHC’s Man of the Match, Jake Wilson, means they won 5-4 and are in the hat for the next round draw."

Women’s 1 lost 0-11 away to University of Nottingham Women’s 3rd XI (EH Championships)

Women’s 2 lost 0-4 away to Ashby Ladies 2s
Player of the Match: Sophie Tomlinson

"A cracking performance from Sophie Tomlinson in goal, and captain, Niamh Arthur, playing at the back, and Sue Henderson dominated the pitch with her accurate hits. The team played well with Ruby Howe and Evie Hunter running in circles, passing the ball around the opposition, but sadly it never made its way into the goal. Despite all of this Ashby got 4 lucky goals... but we don’t need to speak about that. Well played all!"

Mixed A won 3-2 away to Druck Aardvarks
Goals: Laura Jarmulewski (2) & Joshua Osborne
Player of the Match: Laura Jarmulewski

"This week we were blessed with the Men’s 2s very own version of the Chuckle Brothers in the form of Jack March and Josh Osborne and the pre-match buzz on the terraces was would their passing technique continue to be to you, to me? In truth we need not have worried because from the off we moved the ball effortlessly around the park and the curious formation, whilst sketchy at times, resulted in a high press that meant more often than not we won the ball back in their half and as the game wore on the opposition’s frustration grew.

So, who to name check this week? Well, Laura Jarmulewski and Jake Sutherland both fell over at inopportune times and I should have fallen over twice when they scored (it might have given me more chance to save both of their goals). We always knew where Sally Kirke was because whenever she tracked back into our D she told anyone who was listening that she wasn’t a centre-back, however Thomas Ainsworth did do a fine impression of one. Finally, a shout out to Jack for showing Josh how to hold a position and play in front of the back two after we let them pull the game back to 2-2."
