We’ve had a very busy weekend of hockey, with the first of our England Hockey Championship matches for the U16s and Men’s 1 teams.

Saturday 26th October:

Men’s 1 won 4-0 away to Leicester Men’s 2
Goals: Ryan Harrison (2), Tom Whitehouse & Nick Hall
Player of the Match: Ryan Harrison

Men’s 2 won 1-0 at home to Atherstone Adders 3
Goal: Richard Goswell
Player of the Match: Matti Hodgson

Men’s 3 lost 2-3 away to Khalsa Leamington 6
Goals: Tom Greeves & Matt Knipe
Player of the Match: Tom Greeves

"Harborough suffered a very narrow defeat of 3-2 away to Khalsa Leamington 6. The pitch was damp which stopped the flow of our normal play style. We finished the first half 2-1 up with a brilliant goal from Thomas Ainsworth and a cracking team goal from Rob Davies and Matt Knipe.

Harborough resisted pressure but Leamington got an early goal to level the score, the 3s continued to work hard as a team for another goal and created a lot of opportunities but were unable to score. However, after a disputed short corner, Leamington scored their third and final goal."

Women’s 1 won 4-1 at home to Melton Ladies 1s
Goals: Grace Clarke, Emily Grimmett, Hattie Hammond & Lucy James
Player of Match: Emily Grimmett

"In the first half Harborough used their amazing defence to pass around the back quicker than the opposition could get to them. This then led to a quick slip goal from Grace Clarke that helped to get us in the right mindset for another three... Harborough kept up the pressure with another goal from Lucy James as she received a quick ball from Abby Reeves and smacked it into the corner of the goal. Another goal was scored by Emily Grimmett as she took it from a defender and lifted it behind the keeper.

Later on in the game, Harborough had to play with one less player but still managed to keep the pressure up with GK Vicky Christodoulou starting to get a little cold on the other side of the pitch. This then led to another goal by Hattie Hammond on her reverse side which slipped straight past the keeper.

The 1s could have scored a few more, but at least the team won and kept the ball away from the other D! A good win from Harborough this weekend!"

Women’s 3 lost 1-4 at home to MH Women’s 2 (League match)
Goal: Laura Jarmulewski
Player of the Match: Takara Walker

"The 3s faced the 2s this week on a rain sodden pitch, with rain sodden players! The 3's started brightly with some good passages of play through the midfield and on the wings. But the 2s onslaught was marshaled brilliantly by Sue 'Hendo' Henderson in the centre, resulting in their first goal. Despite having a surprise appearance from International legend, Kerry Moralee, the 2s kept attacking. 3s began to lose their shape desperately defending akin to the All Blacks, with a similar result.

With a foray into the 2s D we were rewarded with a penalty flick as step-in GK Grace Clarke did a sweet tap dance on the ball preventing us from scoring. Laura Jarmulewski dispatched the flick with a lethal shot 2-1!

The second half saw us working better in the mid, but getting it into the final third never looked likely. Maybe rain in old bones or the lack of a match last week saw the 3s again lose their shape and the 2s were rewarded with another goal. The 2s were gifted a final goal and the end score was 4-1.

Hendo, Milly Docherty and Cat Dabbs were stand out players and well done to Faith Naylor and Evie Hunter going up to the 2s.
Our player of the match was Takara Walker, though Laura, Vanessa Riley, Kerry Moralee and Georgie Baker had a great game."

Women’s 2 won 4-1 away to MH Women’s 3 (League match)
Goals: Jennifer Pollock (2), Lucy James & Evie Hunter
Player of the Match: Sue Henderson

"The team had no Gk this week, so Grace Clarke stepped in with an injured hand – thank you Grace!

Jennifer Pollock scored her first goals for Harborough, the first one was a cracker from the edge of the D along the baseline – so fast that everyone had to double-take! The team played well, kept their formation and possession of the ball.

A fun and competitive game, played in a good atmosphere. Well played all, from both teams."

Mixed A lost 1-6 Leicester Hospitals (Junior Cup)
Goal: Vanessa Riley

Sunday 27th October:

U16 Girls lost 0-11 at home to Spalding (England Hockey Championships)

"What a game! The U16 girls joined together to play a very tough game against Spalding U16 girls.

Despite of the 11-0 loss, the team played very well together for one of their first matches. There was some incredible play, including Daisy Dow’s amazing saves, Grace Howe’s powerful pushes and, Liv Edwins and Ruby Howe’s synchro-pair attacking! Well played girls!"

U16 Girls

U16 Boys won 9-4 at home to Sikh Union Coventry (England Hockey Championships)
Goals: Thomas Parry (5), Sam Haynes-Coote (2), Harry Wilford & Oliver Laskey

"It was looking like it was going to be a long afternoon as Sikh Union missed a couple of early opportunities with Harborough playing without a goalkeeper and with only 10 men. However, Harborough started to pass the ball well and, thanks to goals from Sam Haynes-Coote and Thoma Parry, the Boys accelerated into a 2-0 lead; although, Union clawed their way back to lead 3-2 at half time.

As the second half got underway, Thomas got another 4 goals, Sam added to his tally as well as Harry Wilford and Oliver Laskey getting on the scoresheet themselves with only 1 goal in reply. The match ended 9-4 to the 10 men of Harborough against Sikh Union who were reduced to 10 after a second yellow late on in the game."

U16 Boys

Men’s 1 won 8-0 away to Loughborough Town 4 (England Hockey Championships)
Goals: Jordan Allen (2), Tom Whitehouse (2), Ben Langdown (2), Nick Hall & Ryan Harrison
Player of the Match: Jon Cooper

Women’s 1 won 2-1 away to Charnwood Sileby Ladies 1s (rescheduled League match)
Goals: Hattie Hammond (2)
Player of the Match: Hattie Hammond

"Harborough's makeshift 11 started brightly against Charnwood's full strength, having a squad of 16, creating a lot of chances through Fiona Ginn and Hatty Clements down the right. Fiona created the opening goal, running down the baseline before playing it across the goal to Hattie Hammond at the back post to tap home for 1-0. Harborough then had a well worked goal controversially disallowed, Fiona again playing it to Vanessa Riley to score, but unfortunately the game remained just 1-0 at half time.

Harborough kept pushing in the second half, again working it nicely forward and Fiona found Hattie H in the D to score a well deserved second. The team's concentration then dropped leading to lots of pressure from Charnwood for the first time in the game. Ellie John got walloped in the foot to give away a short, and the resulting short hit Ellie's other foot on the line leading to a flick for the opposition. Beth Pedler in goal, who had never previously saved a flick, stepped up to make a fantastic save.

After some scrappy play an unfortunate stick tackle gave away a short, which they duly dispatched 2-1, but Harborough managed to hold out for a 2-1 win. Player of the Match goes to Hattie Hammond for her two well taken goals."
