With the first of the Men's league matches, we think it’s safe to say there was a bit of a GoalFest on Saturday…

Men’s 1 won 12-0 at home to Coalville 3
Goals: Ryan Harrison (3), Tom Whitehouse (3), Tom Williams (2), Tom Parry (2), Jon Cooper & Ben Langdown
Player of the Match: Ryan Harrison

Men’s 2 won 5-2 away to Coalville 4
Goals: Sam Haynes-Coote (2), Noel Burton (2) & Matt Cook
Player of the Match: Sam Haynes-Coote

Men’s 3 lost 2-4 away to Loughborough Town 5
Goals: Harry Wilford & Owen Arthur
Player of the Match: Harry Wilford

"Men’s 3s had a thrilling first league match that they sadly lost 4-2 to Loughborough town 5s. The team started the game with a short corner that Wyn Sleeman sent to Harry Wilford who spun over it to nutmeg the keeper. The opposition then scored 4 decent goals, but if it wasn’t for GK Jason Perry it could have been more!

After the tragic 4 goals Harborough got one back with a perfect cross from Theo Powys-Smith into Owen Arthur who deflected it into the bottom corner. Player of the Match went to Harry Wilford for a great performance and fine goal."

Women’s 1 won 5-1 at home to Half Century Ladies 1
Goals: Hattie Hammond (2), Abby Reeves, Charis Simpkin & Liv Edwins
Player of the Match: Liv Edwins

"The Women's 1s recorded their first win of the season by beating Half Century 5-1. After a scrappy first 10 minutes, Harborough started finding gaps in the Half Century defence by winning a short corner which was scrambled into the back of the goal by Hattie Hammond.

What followed was the goal of the game. Straight out of Dave's hockey textbook. Harborough playing the ball out of the back before switching it to the right with some quick passing around the D where the ball was played to Charis Simpkin at the far post to sweep home for 2-0. Harborough kept up the pressure with two more quick fire goals, the first followed a quick break with the ball played through to Abby Reeves who slotted it across the goal for Liv Edwins to tap in. Abby then got another, breaking through the defence and rounding the keeper. A fifth followed with Hattie setting up Liv who again made a great run into the D to score. It could have been 6-0 at just before half time – Hattie was through and the ball bounced up over the keeper into the net but it seems someone lost count somewhere along the way so the score remained 5-0.

The less said about the second half the better. Harborough never really switched back on and Ellie John got herself a green card for petulantly kicking the ball away. Half Century got themselves a consolation goal and could have had a couple more but GK Vicky Christodoulou made some great saves to keep them out. The 1s should have scored more near the end with some nice play around the D but couldn't quite convert. Player of the Match goes to Liv who made some great runs all game. Fantastic result and nice to get some points on the board!"

Women’s 3 won 10-0 away to Roundhill Women’s 1s
Goals: Ella Partridge (2), Cat Dabbs (2), Emily Williams (2), Amy Evans (2) & Vanessa Riley (2)
Player of the Match: Cat Dabbs

"Ladies 3s faced a team shorter than them today! Special guest appearances from the young George Best of ladies hockey, Ella Partridge, our volunteer tribute Cat Dabbs, Mixed's very own Zoe Marlow and the usual 3's home guard.

The 3s started off really well with some fantastic work down the wings from Faith Naylor, Cat, Vanessa Riley, Amy Evans, Emily Williams, Sally Kirke, Ella and Laura Jarmulewski. Chances were plentiful with beautiful crosses into the D from Laura and eventually our forwards worked out if they hung round the goal they could deflect them in... which they started doing. Amy Evans, Emily Williams, Cat Dabbs, Ella Partridge and Vanessa Riley all scored twice. The opposition scored zero, and despite their pressing never looked like scoring.

Player of the Match was Cat Dabbs, well deserved!"

Mixed A drew 2-2 at home to Old Bags
Goals: Cian Kirke & Tom Pedler
Player of the Match: Imy March & Harry wilford

"In an interview before the Rugby World Cup, Eddie Jones referred to the destructive qualities of flankers Sam Underhill and Tom Curry and nicknamed them the kamikaze twins. Well the Mixed A’s unleashed MHHC’s own version of the kamikaze twins yesterday against Old Bags in the form of Owen Arthur and Cian Kirke in an entertaining 2 all draw at the Sandy Siro.

Old Bags went into the game unbeaten and gave a debut to their new signing Peter March. If he thought he’d left a sinking ship he was mistaken as they found their opposition to be a very buoyant, old spice smelling, tanned and toned, let’s go surfing now, everybody’s learning now, come on a safari with me, type team and very quickly we set up camp in their half. We deservedly took the lead through a well-rehearsed training ground move finished by Cian, and with a bit more composure in front of goal we could have put the game to bed. Old Bags slowly rallied and equalised just before the break capitalising on some poor defending.

The second half continued in the same vein with lots of pressure and short corners but no final outcome and it was frustrating to go 2-1 behind. Not disheartened we pressed for the equaliser and this duly arrived with 10 minutes to go when Tom Pedler drove into the D and after a little to you, to me, scored with a blistering shot at the far post.

So, we all came off the pitch feeling that hockey was the winner and Peter, in particular, was happy with a draw. We’re three games into the season now and it’s looking good.

Player of the Match – joint between Imy March, for keeping her Dad in her back pocket and Harry Wilford for an assured game at centre-back."

Badgers drew 1-1 at home to Wellingborough
Goal: Finn Ingram-Hawkes
Player of the Match: Ruby Howe

"A fine performance from a team full of new Badgers players. Finn Ingram-Hawkes scored a cracker after a number of narrow misses, and the future is looking bright for MHHC Badgers."
