"The combined age of the Men's 3rd team this week was around 120 years. Or 220 if you include me and Wilf (the old codgers)! The other nine players were all U16 (many just 13) and three of them playing their first men's game.

We didn't touch the ball for the first few minutes and I worried we were going to be in for a long game. Then our lads realised how good they were and started to play some hockey. I can honestly say that for most of the first half the two codgers at the back didn't have a great deal to do - we were so well shielded by James Lindsay, Tom Ainsworth and Theo Powys-Smith. As well as doing their defensive jobs they were also always available for a pass to set up an attack.

Slightly further forward Owen Arthur and Cian Kirke tackled anything that came within range, and held the ball superbly going past their markers and causing chaos in the Saints defence, but the whole team played really well as a unit with lots of short passing and movement off the ball. The pressure eventually paid off when we earned a penalty corner. The ball was played to Ben Matthews who had run in to the right hand post - he fired the ball from a very tight angle.

Harborough continued to play some lovely passing hockey, triangles all over the pitch, but couldn't quite create the second goal. Unfortunately we conceded just before half time when Saints scored from a penalty corner.

We expected Saints to come back strongly in the second half and they did - for about 5 minutes. Then our boys reasserted themselves and went back to playing our hockey. Another goal for Ben - the same move from a corner only this time he smashed it off the post - it bounced back onto a defenders foot and then trickled over the line.

Rafal Hodgson, Finn Ingram-Hawkes and Ben continued to cause problems with their movement with Owen and Cian pulling the strings just behind. The third and fourth goals were Owens. A brilliant run into the far post where he was picked out by one of the codgers who had wandered up the pitch, after some great work by Theo, Rafal and Cian in the corner. Then a brilliant solo effort where he dribbled past 2 or 3 defenders before flicking the ball into the net.

Saints managed a few attacks of their own, but were mostly kept at bay. They did manage a couple of goals which made the last 2 minutes a little nervy, but we held out for a well earned win.

There is only one player not mentioned in this report - our man of the match Luke Reeves. He volunteered to play in goal, and made several saves which did as much as anyone to earn this result. In truth though, every player worked so hard and this was a great team effort. Well done to all our boys."

Women’s 1 won 7-0 away to Roundhill Women's 1 (Plate)
Goals: Milly Docherty (2), Evie Hunter (2), Liv Edwins, Grace Howe & Ruby Howe

Women’s 2 lost 0-8 away to Ashby Ladies (Plate)
Player of the Match: Helen Fletcher

"The team knew it was going to be tough as they were a few members short; but they were determined to play anyway, and every ;member of the team played their socks off! With only nine players they were all magnificent, receiving compliments from the oppo and the umpires after the match.

Player of the Match goes to Helen Fletcher in goal, and Ella Partridge got the Player of the Match from the opposition. Amazing work, ladies!"

Mixed A won 10-0 away to Leicester University
Goals: Laura Jarmulewski (2), Jake Sutherland (2), Jon Cooper (2), Harrison Ginn (2), Toby Fletcher & Adrian Warren

"After winning 15-0 last week we headed to Manor Road to play Leicester University. The students had learned one lesson from our previous win as they had a squad of 15, but other than that they had little answer for another barnstorming display as we won 10-0.

With a brace of goals each from Laura Jarmulewski, Jon Cooper, Harrison Ginn and Jake Sutherland and a goal apiece for Toby Fletcher and Adrian Warren most of my time in goal was spent talking to Su Jarmulewski. Elsewhere on the pitch Vanessa Riley, Sally Kirke and Zoe Marlow shored up the right-hand side of the pitch."

Sunday:

U16 Girls won 8-1 away to Kettering (England Hockey Championships)
Goals: Charlotte Howe (2), Takara Walker (2), Ruby Howe, Maisie Howe, Evie Hunter & Emma Sleeman

Women’s O35s lost 0-7 away to Newark  (England Hockey Championships)

"Women's O35s lost 0-7 to Newark today, in a fun, interesting and eventful match. We had a contingent of guest players from Leicester City, but as our numbers had slowly shrunk over the week, due to illness and injury, we turned up with just 10! The team held off the opposition for at least 25 mins of the first half until Newark took advantage of the missing player in our formation. Soon into the second half, our ace defender took a ball to the foot and we saw the game out with just 9!

Despite the score line the team played great hockey, created many chances on goal, and had a great time with the Leicester ladies - who can’t wait to play with us again!"
